Fourteen-year-old Betty Birungi from Katovu Village (Ngogwe, Buikwe District) in Uganda dreams of becoming a doctor. Today she is fighting just to survive.
After losing her father at a tender age, Betty and her two siblings have been raised by their resilient but impoverished mother. Betty’s life has been upended by a devastating diagnosis a congenital heart defect. Her mother has fought tirelessly for her, moving from Allan Store community health clinic to Jinja regional referral hospital and finally to the Uganda Heart Institute at Mulago.Currently, Betty relies on medicine that offers only temporary relief. Her condition is deteriorating daily. Doctors issued an urgent ultimatum. Betty needs immediate life-saving heart surgery from the Uganda Heart Institute, Mulago Hospital. The financial toll has been catastrophic. Her mother has poured every shilling from her small poultry business into Betty’s medical bills until the project went completely bankrupt. Desperate and out of options, Betty has been forced to drop out of school, leaving her books and her dreams behind.
Through our community outreach programs, KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation has discovered Betty. We are launching an urgent fundraising campaign to enable her secure the surgery she desperately needs. The organization is seeking 100 Million UGX (approximately $26,783USD) to fund Betty’s complete clinical pathway. This total budget covers all pre-operative preparation, surgical execution and essential post-operative recovery. Betty wants to cure others one day but first she needs to be cured. We call upon all individuals, well-wishers and institutions to stand with us. Your donation provides the critical cardiac surgery Betty urgently needs, funding medicine, hospital care and rehabilitation for full recovery helping Betty return to her studies and pursue her dream of becoming a doctor.
