For nearly Four years,76-year-old Jaja Jamilu Mukasa lived in Profound isolation in a small mud-brick room on the fringes of Kinawataka.Following the tragic loss of his two adult children to illness, Jaja Mukasa found himself entirely without family safety net. Severe osteoarthritis left him unable to walk without excruciating pain, confining him to a thin floor mat for days at a time. Left with no steady income, he relied entirely on the erratic kindness of neighbors for water and a single daily meal of plain porridge.
The trajectory of Jaja Mukasa’s life completely shifted when a community health surveillance team from the KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation discovered his living conditions during a door-to-door neighborhood welfare check. He was immediately integrated into the flagship KBN Geriatric and Elderly Care Program a specialized initiative dedicated to restoring health, dignity and community connection to abandoned senior citizens.
Jaja Mukasa did not just survive, he re-entered the social fabric of his neighborhood. No longer hidden away in pain, his physical improvements allowed him to attend KBN’s weekend senior solidarity circles hosted at the foundation’s center.
Today, Jaja Mukasa’s home is clean, safe and warm. On weekends, he can be found sitting beneath the shade of a mango tree at the Kinawataka hub, smiling broadly as he passes down traditional oral history and wise counsel to the youth in the community.
