For years, 29-Year Old Florence Akello navigated a fragile existence in Sumbwe village located in Nakaseke District, balancing the volatile nature of informal day labor with the demands of raising three young children alone. Following the loss of her husband, her primary income dwindled to less than UGX 7,000 (approx. $1.90) a day earned from washing clothes across neighborhoods. Facing eviction and unable to afford primary school fees; Florence felt locked in a cycle of generational poverty.
Everything changed when she was scouted by outreach coordinators from the KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation and enrolled into the flagship Lady Thrive Initiative. This comprehensive program is specifically designed to transition highly vulnerable women, single mothers and widows from subsistence living into sustainable, self-reliant enterprise ownership.

Upon her graduation from the cohort, the organization equipped Florence with a start-up package consisting of an industrial sewing machine, basic fabric supplies and an initial micro-grant.
Today, Florence operates a bustling retail tailoring workshop out of a shared space near Semuto town. Her daily income has increased more than fivefold allowing her to securely pay rent, fully fund her children’s education and comfortably contribute monthly savings to her local community women’s banking ring.
