For seven years, Namono Mary lived in the quiet shadows of Kasubi, a bustling suburb of Kampala. Her son, Brian was born with profound hearing loss and developmental delays. In her community, Brian’s condition was heavily mis-understood.Neighbors whispered, children refused to play with him and Mary was forced to quit her market stall to provide constant, round-the-clock care. Isolated and financially strained, Mary felt entirely forgotten.
The turning point came in late 2025 during the mobilization of their inaugural KBN Annual Disability Run. A volunteer coordinator, from the KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation met Mary while distributing running kits in the neighbourhood. Recognizing Brian’s immediate need for specialized care, the volunteer enrolled the family into the foundation’s Disability Support. Today, Mary operates a thriving tailoring business right from her home, ensuring she can earn a sustainable income while remaining present for her son. Brian is now learning to communicate effectively and for the first time in his life, his playing openly with other children in the neighborhood. “KBN didn’t just give us financial aid,” Mary shared during a recent community circle at the Foundation’s Kireka office. They gave my son a voice, and they gave me my dignity back. I no longer hide my child from the world.
In many parts of Uganda, children living with development, physical or sensory disabilities are completely hidden away from society. Systematic stigma, an absolute lack of specialized care and severe financial hardships force mothers into isolation and trap families in deep poverty. These children do not lack potential-they lack a community that protects their fundamental rights.
