Drug Abuse Prevention Program

This program was designed to provide the education and support necessary to diminish drug abuse in communities, schools and the work premises.

How we do it

We seek to involve the family community or work place in the prevention process, which often requires continued leadership and financial support:

Drug misuse can have a pervasive effect on entire communities. Understanding drug use risk factors and spreading the word through prevention programs may be the best defense against people misusing drugs. The drug abuse prevention program is implemented through the following strategies; increased community awareness and education, establish a community support network, foster youth engagement, strengthen collaboration with local organizations, reduce access to harmful substances, empower parents and care givers. under this program do the following;

Increased community awareness and education

Our team develops and implements education campaigns and workshops on drug abuse prevention within various communities. We increase awareness about the risks associated with drug abuse and also promote healthy behaviors through informative materials and events.

Establish a community support Network

We create a network of trained community volunteers and professionals who can provide support and resources to individuals and families affected by drug abuse. We ensure that community members have access to counselling, treatment referrals and recovery support services

Foster youth engagement

Our drug abuse prevention team develops programs that actively engage youths in drug prevention efforts, empowering them to make informed choices and resist peer pressure. We promote safe and constructive recreational activities and opportunities for youth involvement in the community.

Strengthen collaboration with local organizations

By establishing partnerships with local schools, health care providers, law enforcement agencies and social service organizations to coordinate efforts and share resources. Through this program, we use combined efforts to drug abuse prevention within the community.

Reduce access to harmful substances

We also work with local authorities to enforce policies that restrict access to illicit drugs and alcohol by minors. We promote responsible education disposal practices to reduce the availability of prescription of drugs for misuse.

Promote a stigma free environment

Our team challenges and reduces the stigma associated with drug addiction, encouraging individuals to seek help without fear or judgment. We promote understanding and empathy within the community towards those affected by substance disorders

Empower parents and care givers

We provide resources, workshops and support groups for parents and care givers to enhance their ability to recorgnize signs of drug abuse and communicate effectively with their children. We equip parents with tools to create a nurturing and drug free home environment.

Enhance access to prevention resources

Our team works hand in hand with some of the centralized resource hubs where community members can access information, treatment, options and support services. We ensure that information is available in multiple languages and formats to reach diverse populations within the community.

Our Stories

Life changing

Fredrick

34 years old

I was subject to physical abuse and began living rough at a very tender age. Like too many people, substance use disorder had taken over my life that is until one day when I found the inner strength to ask for help.

Growing up as a child, I lost my mother and father and became an orphan at a very young age hopelessly without anyone to take care of me, I escaped to Makindye, one of the suburbs in the city (Kampala) and started to look for a new life. On arrival to Makindye, I joined a group of teenagers who influenced me to start using drugs whereby we started to take cocaine and marijuana in smaller quantities and later on advanced to consuming it in larger quantities until I became an addict. In 2019, I suffered from a serious mental disorder commonly referred to as manic depression which resulted into severe, emotional, behavioral and brought me physical problems to my health.

This condition made me feel miserable and caused problems to my daily life such as extreme mood changes of highs and lows. I started withdrawing from friends and activities, experienced significant tiredness, low energy levels and sleeping disorders, excessive anger, hostility and violence started manifesting in my life. One day unconsciously I attacked my grandmother and nearly beat her to death. I turned into a complete nuisance in society and people treated me badly. l one day found inner strength to ask for help. In 2022, KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation through their Drug Abuse Prevention Program in the community, I got in touch with one of their social workers who really fought for me. “We are going to fight real hard for you, I need you to fight hard for yourself” the social worker said. She sent me through detoxing and I started going to meet and hang out with other people who live in the recovery house.

After the rehabilitation process, my life changed and I reduced my level of drug consumption and also promised to withdraw completely from substance use that’s if i was to get a job that could sustain me and keep my mind occupied. my recovery from drug addiction gave KBN Helping Hands and Wellness Foundation hope that there are many drug addicts in our communities whose lives can be transformed if given an opportunity. And therefore they are working hard through their Drug Abuse Prevention Program to fight against addiction in our communities.
